Polish activist Monika Silva's death investigated by Olsztyn prosecutors

Polish anti‑corruption activist Monika Silva‑Veras, who had lived in Ecuador for over a decade, was found dead on 8 June in her Montanita apartment. The Olsztyn district prosecutor in Poland opened a case on 12 June, initially classifying it as non‑intentional homicide, but said the qualification could change as evidence is examined.

Ecuadorian authorities have also launched a probe, with the interior minister suggesting suicide, while human‑rights groups say forensic findings point to murder. The Olsztyn office has received the first set of Ecuadorian investigative documents through diplomatic channels; they are being translated from Spanish. Prosecutor Daniel Brodowski said no Polish prosecutor will travel to Ecuador and that the case will rely on local authorities. The mother of the deceased is being contacted for testimony via the Polish embassy in Peru, which also covers Ecuador.

Silva headed the La Integridad foundation and reported alleged corruption and irregular land‑sale practices by local officials, receiving threats prior to her death. Both Polish and Ecuadorian investigators are seeking testimony from those close to her as the investigation proceeds.
