Polish activist Monika Silva's death prompts international investigation in Ecuador

Polish human‑rights activist Monika Silva was found dead in her home in Montañita, Santa Elena Province, Ecuador on 12 June 2026. Her mother, Martyna Koniuszek, arrived in Ecuador on 16 June seeking answers. The case has drawn calls from the European Union, the Inter‑American Commission on Human Rights and the Polish government for a swift, thorough, independent inquiry.

Ecuador’s Prosecutor’s Office has requested international forensic expertise, asking foreign specialists to assist in clarifying the circumstances of Silva’s death. Interior Minister John Reimberg said the investigation will be carried out with “maximum speed, rigor and transparency” and pledged full cooperation with the prosecutor and the international experts.

Silva, a member of the Fundación La Integridad, had been reporting alleged corruption in the coastal province. Her death has heightened concerns over the protection of activists and prompted diplomatic pressure for accountability.
