Polish activist Monika Silva's murder case stalls as body remains in Ecuador morgue

Polish anti‑corruption activist Monika Silva Koniuszek was found dead on 8 June in her home in Montañita, Santa Elena province, Ecuador. An autopsy revealed a fatal skull blow and strangulation, indicating homicide, counter to the Ecuadorian interior minister’s initial suggestion of suicide.

Ecuadorian authorities have kept Silva’s body in the provincial morgue for more than a month, delaying burial until the investigation concludes. Families and NGOs, including CEPAM and the Center for Defense of Human Rights, have asked for a second autopsy and for the prosecutor to interview the minister who publicly called the death a suicide. Argentine forensic experts have been present for oversight, but no further examinations have been performed yet. The procedural phase may last up to two years.

Silva, who had lived in Ecuador for over a decade and led the La Integridad foundation, regularly exposed alleged corruption involving local politicians and companies linked to President Daniel Noboa’s family. Her death has sparked symbolic vigils, a mural, and a street dedication in Montañita, as friends and community members demand a transparent investigation.
