Poland faces rising heating costs and energy transition challenges
As the heating season begins in Poland, households and businesses face significant economic pressure due to rising energy costs. Estimates suggest the average household will spend approximately 5,200 PLN annually on electricity and heating in 2025. While wage growth has historically outpaced energy inflation, the current outlook remains challenging due to high prices for hydrocarbons, coal, and wood.
To mitigate these costs, political and industry leaders are proposing various measures. Przemysław Czarnek of PiS has announced plans for a legislative project aimed at reducing heating expenses for families and enterprises. Additionally, the Polish Pellet Council has proposed a “Pellet Plus” initiative, which could include a 15% tax relief for households using A1 grade wood pellets.
On a structural level, the government is planning a major modernization of small heating plants, aiming to replace coal with gas for approximately 15 million people. This transition is part of a broader strategy to increase energy security and reduce coal dependency. However, experts note that large-scale investments in nuclear and offshore wind energy will primarily generate electricity rather than direct heat for urban district heating networks, leaving many reliant on existing gas and biomass infrastructure.
