Polish agricultural sectors face production and price volatility

Polish agricultural producers are facing significant challenges across different sectors. Blueberry growers experienced a volatile season characterized by extreme weather shifts. Initial heatwaves during the ripening of early varieties like Duke impacted fruit quality and coloring, followed by cooler, rainy periods. While prices dropped to as low as 10 PLN per kilogram during peak supply, they recovered to over 30 PLN per kilogram toward the end of the season as availability decreased. Labor shortages for harvesting also remain a critical issue for the industry.

In the sugar sector, Polish sugar beet production is projected to decline significantly. According to the European Commission's MARS bulletin, the cultivation area has decreased by approximately 8–8.5%, and forecasted yields are expected to drop by over 8% compared to last year. This reduction is attributed to both weather conditions and strategic decisions by major producers; Südzucker has reduced contracted areas by about 25%, and Krajowa Grupa Spożywcza has cut contracting by 10%. Consequently, national sugar production is estimated to fall to between 2.1 and 2.15 million tons, down from 2.57 million tons in the previous year.
