Polish agriculture faces rising costs and market fragmentation
Polish agricultural producers are facing significant economic challenges due to market fragmentation and rising production costs. Piotr Zieliński, Vice President of Gruppa Organic, warns that the Polish apple sector is too fragmented to negotiate effectively with large retail chains and processing plants. He notes that even lower yields may not drive up prices significantly due to competition from China, the USA, and Turkey, alongside rising energy and transport costs.
Simultaneously, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Adam Nowak has acknowledged the growing anxiety among farmers regarding volatile global markets. The instability in the Middle East is impacting fuel prices, which in turn drives up the cost of fertilizers and other essential production inputs. While there are upward price trends for rapeseed, corn, and cereals, the cost of production is currently rising faster than the sale prices of these crops. The Ministry is considering fertilizer and fuel assistance to mitigate these pressures.
