US-led Military Micro‑Balloon Training Planned Over Poland in July‑August
The Polish Armed Forces have issued a public notice that the United States‑led Multi‑Domain Command Europe (MDC‑E) will conduct a training exercise over Polish airspace in late July and August 2026. The operation will use Micro‑High‑Altitude Balloons (Micro‑HAB), lightweight sensor platforms that can remain at altitudes of 18‑20 kilometres for extended periods. These micro‑balloons are presented as a low‑cost alternative to traditional satellites for high‑precision observation.
All flights are coordinated with the Civil‑Military Airspace Coordination and the Polish Air Navigation Services (FIR Warsaw), and they are said to pose no threat to residents. The military asks the public to refrain from touching any found balloon debris and to report such items to the authorities immediately.
The exercise is part of broader NATO testing of modern observation systems and reflects a growing global market for stratospheric unmanned platforms, projected to rise from roughly $2.3 billion in 2023 to over $4.8 billion in coming years.
