Polish apple growers face lower yields and price volatility

Polish apple producers are navigating a complex season characterized by declining yields and fluctuating prices. According to estimates from Statistics Poland (GUS), domestic harvests for 2026 are projected to be approximately 17.7% lower than last year, marking the lowest production levels since 2019. This decline is attributed to adverse weather conditions, including high temperatures, hailstorms, and spring frosts.

While export performance remains strong—particularly to Egypt, which is increasingly demanding Gala and Golden varieties—industrial apple prices have seen a downturn. Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development indicates that the average purchase price for apples intended for concentrated juice fell by 5% in September compared to the previous year. Mirosław Maliszewski, president of the Polish Fruit Growers Association, noted that current prices for industrial apples, ranging from 50-60 gr/kg, do not cover production costs.

Experts suggest that while the strong export market for dessert apples could drive price increases in November and December, growers must balance the desire for higher prices with the risk of missing optimal trading windows.
