Polish authorities alert public to senior fraud schemes after two elderly women robbed

Police in Mielc reported that on 16 July two women posing as water‑utility workers entered the home of an 88‑year‑old resident, diverted her attention and stole 39 000 zł from a bedroom wardrobe. The incident is being investigated under article 278 of the Polish Criminal Code, and officers warned residents to verify the identity of any strangers claiming official status.

In a separate case, a 92‑year‑old woman was contacted by a man claiming to be a lieutenant from the Central Bureau of Investigation or the ABW. He persuaded her that her savings were at risk and that she should place 30 000 zł in an envelope for officials to secure. She handed over the money, later realizing she had been duped. Police have highlighted this type of impersonation scam and urged seniors to request identification and confirm any official visits before allowing access to their homes.
