Polish basketball legend Jarosław Jechorek dies at 65
Jarosław Jechorek, a towering figure of Polish basketball, died on 29 July 2026 in Poznań at the age of 65 after a prolonged battle with cancer. The 208‑cm centre was a four‑time Polish champion with Lech Poznań and a long‑time representative of the national team, earning 171 caps and scoring 1,550 points.
Jechorek began his career with Lech, helping the club rise to the top league and reach the elite eight of the European Cup of National Champions in 1988/89. He also won titles with Śląsk Wrocław and briefly played abroad, becoming the first Polish player to appear in France’s top division with Le Mans Sarthe Basket. After retiring, he faced personal challenges, including gambling problems and a fight against prostate and throat cancers, but remained a beloved figure among fans.
His death marks the passing of one of the most recognizable names in Polish basketball history, remembered for his on‑court achievements and enduring popularity.
