Poland Advances Biogas Power as Dairy Plant Hits 80% Self‑Sufficiency, While New Projects Face Protests

The Polmlek dairy plant in Lidzbark Warmiński has become roughly 80 percent energy‑self‑sufficient after installing a biogas unit that processes wastewater. The system, built by SEEN Technologie, produces about 2 million Nm³ of methane per year, generating roughly 1 MW of electricity and 1 MW of heat, cutting the plant’s external energy purchases and lowering CO₂ emissions.

At the Regional Centre for Water‑Sewage Economy in Tychy, a biogas plant processes sewage sludge and biodegradable waste to produce over 6 million m³ of biogas annually. This yields roughly 15 000 MWh of electricity and 62 GJ of heat, fully covering the centre’s own energy needs and supplying a nearby water park, trolleybuses and residential heating. The centre plans additional plants, such as one in Rybnik, but expansion is hampered by local protests driven by fears of odor and noise, as well as lengthy permitting processes. Poland currently operates fewer than 200 biogas facilities compared with about 9 000 in Germany, although estimates suggest the country could support 5–6 thousand plants covering around 30 percent of its energy demand.
