Polish Bishops issue appeals on life protection and youth welfare
During the 406th plenary meeting of the Polish Episcopal Conference in Zakopane, Polish bishops issued several major appeals regarding social and moral issues. Archbishop Tadeusz Wojda, chairman of the conference, emphasized the duty to protect life from conception to natural death, specifically addressing recent parliamentary votes regarding unborn children. He noted that such political decisions could undermine the social perception of life's value and called for increased support for women in difficult life situations.
The bishops also addressed rising concerns regarding violence among children and adolescents. In a statement titled ‘Word in Care for the Young Generation,’ they questioned whether the modern focus on academic grades and exam results has come at the expense of moral formation and conscience-building. They called for a societal ‘examination of conscience’ to address the root causes of suffering within families and schools.
Additionally, the conference approved an updated statute for a commission of independent experts tasked with investigating cases of sexual abuse of minors within the Catholic Church in Poland. Professor Piotr Franaszek has been appointed to lead this commission, which has undergone legal procedures to establish its legal personality.
