Polish Bishops oppose new abortion legislation

The Polish Episcopate Conference (KEP) has expressed formal opposition to recent legislative changes passed by the Sejm regarding abortion laws. During the 406th plenary meeting in Zakopane, Archbishop Tadeusz Wojda, chairman of the KEP, stated that the new policies could negatively impact the social perception of the value of life and undermine the Polish tradition of defending life.

The Sejm recently passed two significant measures: one partially decriminalizing abortion and the assistance provided for it, and another reinstating the provision allowing termination in cases of severe fetal abnormalities, which had been previously removed by a 2020 Constitutional Tribunal ruling. Archbishop Wojda emphasized that caring for the unborn is a “duty of conscience” and noted the Church's ongoing commitment to supporting women in difficult life situations.

In addition to the abortion debate, the bishops approved an amended statute for a commission of independent experts tasked with investigating cases of sexual abuse of minors within the Catholic Church in Poland. Professor Piotr Franaszek has been appointed to lead this commission.
