Poland's berry and vegetable markets see pricing shifts amid supply tensions

Polish black currant processors have abruptly switched from buying fruit in crates for freezing to requesting berries in boxes for pressing, creating price differentials of 3.5‑4.00 zł/kg for pressing versus 5.50 zł/kg or more for freezing. Industry observers suspect the change is a tactic to acquire lower‑quality, heat‑damaged fruit at reduced cost.

In the Bronisz wholesale market near Warsaw, seasonal vegetables are flowing in greater quantities. Red pepper commands about 12 zł/kg, while zucchini sells for under 3 zł/kg, eggplants for 5‑6 zł/kg, and potatoes range from 1.10 to 1.66 zł/kg. Heat waves have also lowered the quality of cauliflower, which now retails for 2.5‑4 zł per head.

July 1 marked Polish Blueberry Day, officially opening the national blueberry season. Despite spring frosts, drought and record summer heat, growers expect yields close to the previous year’s level. Poland remains the EU’s largest blueberry producer, accounting for roughly one‑third of continental output.
