Polish blueberry bun Jagodzianka becomes luxury treat, prices rise
BBC reports that Poland’s traditional blueberry bun, the jagodzianka, has transformed into a status symbol, with premium versions selling for as much as 40 zł and being likened to a Birkin bag. The shift began after the COVID‑19 pandemic when a new generation of artisanal bakers introduced longer fermentation, butter infused with tonka bean, Japanese tangzhong technique, and higher berry-to‑dough ratios.
A price comparison in the cities of Łódź and Zgierz shows the typical cost of a jagodzianka now ranges from 6.99 zł to 10 zł per piece, up from 5–7 zł a year earlier. The rise reflects higher prices for blueberries, butter, eggs and energy. The bun is also celebrated through an unofficial “Jagodzianka Day” on 2 July, underscoring its cultural prominence.
