Polish pilgrims killed in fatal bus accident on Hungarian M3 motorway

A fatal bus accident on the M3 motorway in Hungary has resulted in the deaths of 12 Polish pilgrims who were returning from a religious trip to Medjugorje. Investigators believe the driver may have fallen asleep due to fatigue, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn.

Polish authorities have coordinated a large-scale medical evacuation. Using a special state aircraft and medical helicopters, injured passengers are being transported from Hungarian hospitals to Poland, with Rzeszów-Jasionka airport serving as a primary arrival point. As of the latest updates, 22 injured individuals have been or are being repatriated, while approximately 18 patients remain in Hungarian medical facilities under observation.

Legal and diplomatic efforts are ongoing. Hungarian prosecutors are seeking the continued detention of the driver, and investigations are being conducted by both Hungarian and Polish authorities. Meanwhile, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is managing consular processes, including the identification of victims and the coordination of funeral arrangements. Local communities in Poland, particularly in the Podkarpackie region, have entered periods of mourning following the tragedy.
