Polish business news: Modalto bankruptcy and search for Wojciech Kurowski
The Polish furniture manufacturer Modalto has been declared bankrupt by a court following a creditor's request. The company, based in Krzywin, faced severe financial difficulties starting in 2024, including widespread failure to pay employee wages. The National Labour Inspectorate (PIP) issued 12 wage orders totaling nearly 2 million PLN. Some employees reported arrears amounting to tens of thousands of PLN, with some not receiving pay since July 2024. A meeting for former employees is scheduled for October 28 in Krzywin to discuss the situation.
Separately, Polish police have issued a wanted notice for Wojciech Kurowski, the founder of Optima Development Poland and an investor linked to Rezydencja Gubałówka in Zakopane. The search is based on allegations of fraud under Article 286 § 1 of the Penal Code. Kurowski's former company, Optima Development Poland, previously raised approximately 70 million PLN from investors before declaring bankruptcy. The case highlights ongoing risks within the Polish condo-hotel market, specifically regarding guaranteed rent promises and complex ownership structures.
