Warsaw Mayor Trzaskowski faces scrutiny over South Hospital scandal

The Warsaw City Council will appoint a new supervisory board for the South Hospital on 22 June, replacing the previous board after a series of allegations of mismanagement and political interference. The scandal centres on former SOR coordinator Dr Dawid Kacprzyk, who earned about 1.6 million zł in 2025 despite lacking a medical specialization, and who later corrected 33 invoices and returned roughly 500 thousand zł to the hospital.

Investigations by the city prosecutor’s office, the National Health Fund and the State Labour Inspectorate have examined claims that a VIP‑room was used to give Civic Coalition (KO) politicians and their families priority access to examinations. The hospital’s chief surgeon raised concerns in June 2025, warning that the management had violated ethical and organizational standards. Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski has denied knowledge of the irregularities and says no VIP‑room existed, though earlier campaign statements praised the hospital as a source of pride.

Opposition parties, including the Konfederacja, have demanded political accountability for Trzaskowski and KO deputy minister Marcin Kierwiński, arguing that the affair reflects broader politicisation of public health. The regional medical council called for the depoliticisation of hospital governance, warning that similar scandals could recur without systemic reforms.
