Polish castles prepare for major renovations and closures

Major historical castles in Poland are preparing for extensive, multi-year renovations that will temporarily close them to the public.

Kwidzyn Castle is scheduled to close in September and will remain closed until the second half of 2029. The renovation, costing over 64 million PLN, includes work on window frames, plaster, polychromes, walls, ceilings, and the roof, as well as electrical installations. Funding is provided by the EU FENIKS program (41 million PLN) and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (10 million PLN). A new exhibition regarding the history of Kwidzyn is expected to open by early 2028.

In Olsztyn, the Warmia and Mazury Museum has extended the visiting period for the Olsztyn Castle (Castle of the Warmia Chapter) until September 13 due to high tourist interest and ongoing tender processes. The modernization project, valued at over 76 million PLN, is supported by nearly 49.4 million PLN from European Funds. The works will include conservation, infrastructure modernization, and the creation of new exhibition spaces in the cellars and hurdycia level to improve accessibility and tourism appeal.
