Polish cinematic history and modernist architecture
Historical records highlight various cinematic and architectural landmarks in Poland. In Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, several films utilized local settings, including Jan Rybkowski’s ‘Pierwsze dni’ (1952), which featured the local steelworks and various streets. Other productions filmed in the area include Andrzej Munk’s ‘Człowiek na torze’ (1956), which used the local locomotive depot, and Julian Dziedziny’s ‘Mam tu swój dom’ (1963).
In Kraków, Kino Kijów stands as a significant example of Polish modernism. Opened in 1967 and designed by architect Witold Cęckiewicz, the cinema was built as a dedicated ‘temple of film’ rather than a repurposed space. The structure is noted for its monumental reinforced concrete supports, glass foyer, and a large ceramic mosaic by Krystyna Z.
