Polish cities establish or hold elections for youth councils
Local governments in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki and Torun are implementing or renewing youth advisory bodies to increase civic engagement among young residents.
In Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, the City Council has passed a resolution to establish a Youth City Council consisting of 23 members. The council will represent local youth for a three-year term. Candidates must be residents aged 13 to 20 who are students and possess full public rights. Most seats will be allocated to specific local schools, while four positions will be filled through an open recruitment process. The council aims to enable young people to participate more actively in the city's public life.
In Torun, elections for the next term of the Youth City Council are scheduled for November 25. Eligible candidates are residents aged 14 to 19. To run, applicants must submit a form along with a list of support from at least 10 peers. The council, which has operated in its current form since 2018, serves as a consultative body for issues affecting youth, such as previous petitions regarding free public transportation for students.
