Polish cities Gniezno and Gdańsk seek state and EU funds to restore historic sites

The Gniezno municipal government, together with local heritage groups, has appealed to the Polish prime minister for central funding to preserve the 1875 locomotive depot – the largest of its kind in Europe. The historic complex, listed on the national register, requires extensive renovation and ongoing maintenance that the city cannot afford; PKP plans to sell the property due to operating losses.

In Gdańsk, the city received more than 29 million PLN from the EU’s FEnIKS programme to revitalize the Boże Ciało complex. The grant will fund the creation of the “Pracownia Gdańska” cultural centre, part of a total investment of about 59.5 million PLN. The programme was announced by the culture minister and the city mayor, highlighting the project’s role in preserving a heritage site while providing new community spaces.
