Polish cities invest in solar energy and storage for public utilities

Polish municipalities are expanding renewable energy infrastructure to increase self-sufficiency and reduce operational costs.

In Katowice, the transport company PKM Katowice has completed the installation of a photovoltaic system at its depot. The installation consists of 1,004 panels with a capacity of 499 kWp, expected to produce over 465 MWh of energy annually. The project, which cost approximately 4.5 million PLN and received over 2.2 million PLN in EU funding, also includes a 1 MWh energy storage system to manage surplus electricity.

Similarly, the city of Suwałki is implementing two major renewable energy projects funded by the European Union. The first involves installing photovoltaics and energy storage at 18 public utility buildings, including schools and sports centers, in a project valued at nearly 9 million PLN. The second project, costing 3.7 million PLN, involves constructing a photovoltaic farm and a 2 MWh energy storage facility at the local municipal utility company to provide electricity for charging the city's electric buses.
