Polish citizens demand fiscal transparency despite reluctance to cut benefits
A study conducted by the Human Answer Institute (HAI) and the Ariadna Research Panel reveals a contradiction in Polish public opinion regarding state finances. While 76% of Poles believe politicians are too generous with public funds, only 18% would be willing to give up their own social benefits or tax breaks to reduce the deficit.
There is overwhelming support for increased fiscal transparency. Approximately 84.8% of respondents demand that politicians disclose the specific costs of their election promises and identify the sources of funding for those commitments. Only 4.5% of those surveyed oppose this requirement.
Economist Anna Gołębicka, co-founder of HAI, noted that discussing state finances more openly will make it harder for politicians to make promises without explaining who will pay for them. Communication expert Katarzyna Życińska added that transparency is a matter of respect for citizens, helping to build trust and responsibility regarding shared public funds.
