Polish clubs Stal basketball and Piast football confront financial and licensing crises

Stal S.A., a basketball club from Ostrów Wielkopolski, submitted an application for a licence to compete in the 2026/27 Polish Basketball League season. The filing lacked the required financial guarantees and a confirmed budget, prompting the league to request additional documentation. The club said it is waiting for a decision from the city council and local authorities on financial support, which sponsors need before committing funds.

Piast Gliwice, a football team in the Ekstraklasa, faces a dispute over its finances. Minority shareholder Zbigniew Kałuża warned that the club is incurring losses exceeding 50 million zł and has received 67 million zł in municipal subsidies over the past two years. The club’s management rejected the accusations, announced legal action, and reported that the cumulative loss as of 30 June 2024 was 33 million zł, with unpaid obligations of 28 million zł. Recent measures have reduced the projected loss for the 2024/25 season to about 6.7 million zł, and the club is seeking new investment while completing the first phase of its academy project.
