Polish Court Approves Phone Contact for Detained Driver Sebastian Majtczak

Sebastian Majtczak, 35, remains in solitary pre‑trial detention after being charged with causing a fatal 2023 crash on the A1 highway that killed a family returning from the sea. The court in Piotrków Trybunalski extended his temporary arrest for another three months and considered his request to speak by telephone with his wife.

Majtczak, who was deported from the United Arab Emirates in May 2025, has been allowed only weekly in‑person visits with family members. His defense lawyer argued that the isolation causes severe psychological distress and urged the judge to permit regular phone calls with his spouse. The judge signaled willingness to grant the request, noting that the one‑person cell was imposed for security reasons.

The case continues to draw public attention in Poland, as the crash involved a Kia that collided with barriers and ignited, killing the occupants, while Majtczak fled the scene before being extradited.
