Polish court postpones prison sentence for fatal accident convict

The District Court in Łódź has upheld a decision to postpone the five-year prison sentence of Agnieszka Z., who was convicted of causing a fatal accident in 2021 in Aleksandrów Łódzki. The collision, involving a Jeep, resulted in the deaths of three motorcyclists.

The court ruled that the execution of the sentence will be delayed for one year to allow the convicted woman to complete psychiatric treatment. A prosecutor challenged the decision, citing potential conflicts of interest regarding the psychiatric expert and arguing that certain therapies could be administered within a penitentiary facility. However, the court maintained that the postponement is necessary due to the defendant's current mental health state and the need for psychotherapy that cannot be provided in prison.

The accident occurred when the defendant, driving significantly over the speed limit, attempted an overtaking maneuver and struck two motorcycles. The victims included two riders on a Suzuki and one on a Honda.
