Polish courts deny release for high-profile criminal defendants

Polish courts have issued rulings regarding two high-profile criminal cases. In Łódź, the District Court denied a request for early parole by Karol B., a convict involved in the notorious “skin hunters” case. Karol B. was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2007 for murder. Although he has been participating in rehabilitation and working during a recent six-month break from prison, the judge noted a lack of critical attitude toward his crime and determined that he has not yet developed permanent, socially desirable attitudes.

In a separate case, the District Court in Gdańsk rejected a motion to release Patryk M., known as “Wielki Bu,” from temporary detention. M. faces six charges, including participation in an organized criminal group operating in Poland, the Netherlands, and Spain. The allegations include the trafficking of 17 kg of marijuana and 2 kg of amphetamine, as well as vehicle theft. The court cited concerns regarding potential witness tampering and the risk of flight as reasons to maintain his detention.
