Polish currency: How to detect counterfeits and exchange damaged notes

Guidelines have been outlined for identifying counterfeit Polish banknotes and exchanging damaged currency through the National Bank of Poland (NBP).

To detect counterfeit notes without specialized equipment, individuals should examine the paper texture, which should feel distinct and produce a characteristic rustling sound. Key security features to verify include the watermark, security thread, and elements that change appearance when the note is tilted. When held up to the light, a proper watermark should be visible rather than a mere print or impression.

Regarding damaged currency, the NBP allows for the exchange of torn, soiled, or discolored banknotes provided the denomination is recognizable and authenticity is not in doubt. If more than 75 percent of the original surface area remains in one piece, or if the note is split into no more than nine pieces that collectively equal the original surface, the full value can be recovered. If the remaining surface area is between 45 and 75 percent, only half of the nominal value is payable. Individuals can process these exchanges at any bank operating in Poland or submit a request to the NBP headquarters for amounts up to 2,000 PLN.
