Polish Defence Minister Tomasz Siemoniak addresses Russian missile breach over Lublin

A Russian maneuvering missile, identified as a Ch‑101 type, entered Polish airspace on 30 July 2026 and fell near the village of Tarnawa‑Kolonia in the Lublin region. The projectile was tracked and intercepted by an F‑16 before impact, causing no injuries or property damage. However, alarm sirens failed to sound in ten of the seventeen counties under alert, prompting criticism of the civil defence system.

Defence Minister Tomasz Siemoniak told journalists that the military response was professional and that the missile would have been shot down had it continued its flight. He emphasized ongoing modernisation of the armed forces and the implementation of a civil protection law funded with billions of zlotys. Siemoniak called for an investigation into why the sirens were not activated and urged lessons to be drawn without political blame.

Former deputy minister Maciej Wąsik, speaking in an interview, criticised the government’s handling of the incident, describing it as a test of Poland’s helplessness and a provocation from the east. He warned that repeated incursions could expose organisational shortcomings in Poland’s defence and emergency communication systems.
