Polish diets face rising health risks from sugar, protein excess and vitamin B12 deficiency

Recent research highlights several nutritional threats to public health in Poland. Polish adults are estimated to consume more than 45 kg of sugar each year. Laboratory studies suggest that high sugar intake disrupts the gut microbiome, notably reducing segmented filamentous bacteria and Th17 immune cells, which can promote obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes.

At the same time, vitamin B12 deficiency is becoming more common, especially among vegans, seniors, and patients using certain medications or with gastrointestinal disorders. Deficiency can cause chronic fatigue, anemia, mood changes and neurological symptoms such as tingling, balance problems and gait disturbances.

Separately, excessive protein consumption – sometimes called “przebiałkowanie” – is reported to lead to constipation, heightened thirst, frequent urination, low energy and unwanted weight gain. Health experts recommend that a typical adult intake roughly 1.2‑1.6 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day.
