Polish divers neutralize WWII British mines near Świnoujście

Divers from the 12th Minehunter Squadron have successfully neutralized five British aerial mines dating back to World War II near Świnoujście, Poland. The mines, identified as Mark IV, V, and VI types, were discovered by a civilian company during seabed clearing operations for the ‘Przylądek Pomerania’ government project, which includes a deep-water container terminal.

The explosives, weighing a total of 3.5 tons, contained a combined explosive force equivalent to 2.5 tons of TNT. They were located at a depth of 10 meters, approximately one kilometer from the breakwater of the Świnoujście Gasport.

To minimize environmental impact, the military utilized the deflagration method, which burns the explosive material rather than causing a full detonation. The operation was completed ahead of schedule due to favorable sea conditions. During the operation, authorities enforced strict maritime and coastal restrictions between Ahlbeck and Międzyzdroje to ensure safety.
