Polish doctors recommend adding a pinch of salt to water for better hydration in heat

Medical experts in Poland emphasize that regular fluid intake is essential during periods of high temperature, but plain water alone may not suffice. Dr Tadeusz Zębik of the Municipal Hospital No 4 in Gliwice explains that sweating leads to loss of electrolytes such as potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium, which are needed for muscle and nervous‑system function. He advises adding a small amount of salt to a glass of water – roughly a pinch per glass – to create a simple electrolyte drink that can be prepared at home.

Guidelines suggest a baseline consumption of 1.5–2 liters of fluid per day, rising to 3–4 liters in very hot conditions, with additional intake needed during physical activity, fever, diarrhea or dieting. The advice aims to prevent symptoms of dehydration such as fatigue, headaches, dizziness, nausea, heart‑rhythm disturbances and reduced concentration.
