Polish driver sentenced to 3.5 years for fatal Brivio crash
A Milan court sentenced Krzysztof Lewandowski, a 35‑year‑old Polish driver, to three years and six months in prison for the September 20, 2025 collision that killed 21‑year‑old Giorgia Cagliani and Milena Marangon as they walked to a local festival in Brivio, Lombardy. The judge also ordered a three‑year suspension of Lewandowski’s driving licence.
Lewandowski was found guilty of homicide with the aggravating factor of driving under the influence of narcotics; medical tests detected marijuana in his system. He claimed the drug had been taken days earlier, a defence rejected by the court. The conviction exceeded the public prosecutor’s request of two years and eight months. The driver remains under electronic monitoring at home. Insurance compensation has already been paid to the victims’ families.
The sentencing concludes a nearly ten‑month legal process that began with the tragic impact of the driver’s van, travelling at about 81.5 km/h, into the two pedestrians standing in a line. A third friend survived unharmed and testified at trial.
