Polish education debates focus on math skills and rote learning

Discussions regarding the Polish educational approach highlight both the importance of foundational mathematical skills and criticisms of current teaching methods. Materials developed by the Lodz University of Technology emphasize that mastering the conversion between common and decimal fractions is essential for practical daily tasks, such as measurements and time calculations.

In a separate critique of pedagogical practices, teacher Ryszard Szubartowski argued that the current system relies too heavily on rote memorization of dates and formulas. He suggested that this method “clutters the memory” and does not align with how the brain functions. Szubartowski proposed that learning should instead leverage creativity and emotions to ensure information is effectively processed and retained by the consciousness.
