Polish education system faces criticism over lack of practical skills

A report titled ‘Szkoła do życia’ (School for Life), prepared by the Civic Education Center, reveals high expectations and significant criticism regarding the Polish education system. According to a study of 1,000 individuals aged 18–65, only one-quarter of respondents rate the current school system well, while over one-third rate it poorly.

Respondents emphasized the need for schools to focus on practical life skills (81%), preparation for professional life (80%), and the development of basic competencies (80%). In contrast, teaching critical thinking was ranked lower at 72%. The report suggests that the dissatisfaction may stem from a gap between the diverse needs of society—which include emotional support and social relationship building—and the current academic focus.

In response to these evolving needs, some institutions are implementing specialized programs. For instance, the I LO im. Konarskiego has utilized European funds to participate in the ‘Supporting School – Success School’ project. This initiative focuses on developing key social and emotional competencies through programs like the ‘Relationship Laboratory,’ aiming to provide students with soft skills and psychological comfort alongside traditional academic knowledge.
