Poland to launch third LNG terminal, boosting import capacity to 50 bcm

Four energy firms—Orlen, Unimot, PGE and Enea—have secured long‑term slots for the second floating storage‑and‑regasification unit (FSRU 2) to be built in Gdańsk Bay. The terminal, slated for commissioning in 2030, will become Poland’s third LNG regasification installation, joining the existing on‑shore terminal in Świnoujście and the first FSRU at Gdańsk. After an upgrade the project will handle 6.1 billion m³ of gas per year and will operate with 58 slots, of which about 74 % are already contracted. Combined with the other two terminals, total LNG regasification capacity will reach roughly 20 bcm annually. Together with the Baltic Pipe pipeline and cross‑border interconnectors, Poland’s overall gas‑import capability will approach 50 bcm a year, positioning the country as a regional gas hub in Central‑Eastern Europe. The open‑season procedure that allocated slots is seen as a move to increase competition, lower prices and secure supplies for new gas‑fired power plants, while Orlen, which currently controls about 90 % of the domestic gas market, says the additional participants will strengthen market liquidity rather than diminish its role.
