Polish energy firms PGE, Tauron and ZEW secure 1.87 bn zł cogeneration premium auction

In June 2026 the Polish Energy Regulatory Office announced the results of the cogeneration premium auction, awarding a total of about 1.87 billion zł to three bidders. PGE Energia Ciepła won support of roughly 744 million zł for a new gas‑fired cogeneration unit at the Kraków heat plant, ZEW Kogeneracja secured about 787 million zł for a 49.9 MW project in Wrocław, and Tauron Polska Energia received around 337 million zł for a new cogeneration source in Jaworzno. The awarded premiums, ranging from 210 to 220 zł per MWh, are intended to fund investments that will deliver approximately 8.8 TWh of electricity between 2029 and 2044, bolstering high‑efficiency cogeneration in Poland.

The auction reflects the government's strategy to diversify fuel sources and expand efficient combined heat and power generation, with the overall installed cogeneration capacity in the country remaining around 10 GW. The support mechanism is part of the law promoting electricity from cogeneration and aims to replace older coal‑based units with cleaner gas‑fired technology.
