Polish experts call for obesity drug reimbursement and expanded care

Experts at the Karpacz Economic Forum are advocating for expanded medical coverage and reimbursement for obesity treatments in Poland to mitigate rising healthcare and economic costs. In 2023, complications from obesity, such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension, cost the National Health Fund 3.8 billion PLN, excluding indirect costs related to workplace absenteeism and reduced fertility.

Key proposals include transitioning the KOS-BAR model from a pilot program to a permanent part of guaranteed benefits. This model provides comprehensive care involving dietitians, psychologists, and physiotherapists alongside bariatric surgery. Experts note the model's effectiveness, citing an 80 percent diabetes remission rate after one year in some patients.

There is also a push for the reimbursement of pharmacological treatments. Priority would be given to young adults aged 18–26 with a BMI of at least 35 and metabolic complications, as well as patients with a BMI over 40 who face medical risks that prevent surgical intervention. Funding could potentially be sourced from sugar tax revenues.
