Polish farmers face corn harvest risks and crop destruction
Corn farmers in Poland are navigating a difficult harvest period, balancing the benefits of natural drying against the risk of significant yield losses. While delaying harvest can reduce moisture levels and drying costs, extended time in the field increases the risk of lodging. In cases where plants fall over, losses can exceed 9 percent of the potential yield, sometimes amounting to nearly one ton per hectare in high-yield fields. Weakened stalks and ears may become impossible to collect with standard combine harvester attachments.
Separately, reports have emerged regarding the intentional destruction of crops. In the Podkarpackie region, a group of teenagers on scooters damaged approximately 300 square meters of corn, resulting in estimated losses of 3,000 PLN. Similar incidents of crop damage by off-road vehicles and other means have been reported in the Mazowieckie region, prompting local authorities to pledge legal action against perpetrators to protect local food security and the agricultural economy.
