Polish farmers highlight diverse challenges in small-scale and livestock agriculture

Small-scale and livestock farmers in Poland are navigating distinct operational paths and administrative burdens. In the Podkarpacie region, the Leśna Serowarnia family farm has found success through artisanal cheese production. Utilizing five hectares of pasture and breeds such as Anglo-Nubian and British Toggenburg goats, the farm focuses on processing its own raw materials for direct sale rather than increasing herd size. The owners are currently planning to expand with a new 90-meter creamery and educational workshops.

In contrast, pig farmers in the Łódź Voivodeship face heavy administrative requirements. Janusz Terka, a breeder and member of Solidarność Rolników Piotrków, describes a workload that extends far beyond animal care. Farmers must maintain extensive documentation, including the IRZ+ system for animal registration, records of all persons and vehicles entering the farm, medical logs for animals, and detailed inventories of feed, disinfectants, and rodenticides. These regulatory obligations, combined with fluctuating market prices, add significant complexity to daily agricultural management.
