Polish food inspectorate flags flaws in waffles and pastries across 73 outlets

The Inspekcja Jakości Handlowej Artykułów Rolno‑Spożywczych (IJHARS) carried out a nationwide inspection of 73 cafés and food points in Poland that sell waffles, cream‑filled pastries and similar products. Violations were found in 53 % of the establishments.

Organoleptic assessment of 39 product batches raised no concerns, but laboratory tests on 41 batches revealed issues such as incorrect fat and sugar levels in nine batches, missing DNA of blackcurrant in items marketed as “with berries,” and the presence of plant‑based fats in products labeled as “whipped cream.” Labeling problems were even more common: out of 175 examined batches, 78 (44.6 %) were incorrectly labelled, often using fanciful names, omitting information about prior freezing, or misusing terms like “whipped cream” or “with berries.”

IJHARS said it will apply sanctions prescribed by law for the detected irregularities and reminded operators to ensure that product names accurately reflect composition and that any frozen‑then‑thawed items are marked as “defrosted.”
