Ekstraklasa faces officiating crisis amid Widzew-Wisła draw

The Ekstraklasa football league is currently facing significant scrutiny regarding officiating quality and a high-profile match between Widzew Łódź and Wisła Kraków. The match between Widzew and Wisła ended in a 0-0 draw, marked by a missed penalty by Wisła’s Angel Rodado in the 66th minute, where his shot hit the crossbar. The game was also interrupted by pyrotechnic displays from fans, leading to a ten-minute delay in the first half.

Beyond individual matches, there is a growing crisis in Polish officiating. Ekstraklasa Operations Director Marcin Stefański noted that clubs are demanding real improvements, leading to investments in semi-automatic offside technology. Meanwhile, former referee Arkadiusz Kamil Wójcik has publicly criticized the League Commission, claiming he was labeled a ‘pathological unit’ following a two-year suspension.

Club leaders and coaches have also weighed in. Marek Papszun suggested that the officiating issues stem from deeper systemic problems within the management of the sport, stating that ‘the fish rots from the head.’
