Polish football faces shortage of domestic talent in Ekstraklasa

Zbigniew Boniek has criticized the current state of the PKO Ekstraklasa, noting a lack of high-quality Polish players in the domestic league. He argued that the reliance on foreign players of lower caliber is hindering the success of Polish clubs in European competitions.

Statistics from a recent round of matches support this observation, showing that foreign players occupied nearly 60 percent of the starting lineups, with 118 out of 198 available spots filled by non-Polish athletes. Some clubs, such as Górnik Zabrze and Pogoń, had as many as nine foreign players in their starting elevens. While former PZPN spokesperson Zbigniew Koźmiński acknowledged the trend, he noted that such shifts are common across European leagues.
