Polish governing parties PiS and KO back EU ChatControl internet surveillance directive

Members of the governing Law and Justice (PiS) party together with coalition partners from Civic Coalition (KO) voted in the European Parliament to adopt the "ChatControl" directive, which mandates automatic scanning of messages on online communication platforms. The measure expands mass surveillance of internet communications in Poland, raising concerns about the end of end‑to‑end encryption and privacy rights.

Opposition members of the Konfederacja party condemned the vote, posting on X: "PiS, KO, PSL, Lewica chcą inwigilować Polaków!" PiS vice‑president Patryk Jaki replied that the legislation is intended to combat child sexual abuse using artificial‑intelligence tools, citing more than 20,000 cases of illegal content detected under the temporary regulation. He dismissed the criticism, stating that "Posłowie Konfederacji jak zwykle nie czytają dokumentów, nad którymi głosują." The debate centers on balancing child protection measures with the protection of private electronic correspondence.
