Polish government hospital scandal sparks calls for accountability

A scandal at the South Hospital in Warsaw has drawn intense criticism of the ruling Civic Platform (KO) coalition. Officials appointed inexperienced doctor Dawid Kacprzyk as chief of the emergency department, bypassing qualified anesthesiologists. Investigations allege falsified medical records, misuse of hospital funds, creation of privileged treatment lists for party members, and patient deaths linked to improper intubation procedures.

Opposition candidate for the Ombudsman, Adam Borowski, urged the Rzecznik Praw Obywatelskich to protect whistle‑blower surgeon Dr Emil Jędrzejewski, who reported the irregularities. Borowski warned that the government’s actions undermine civil liberties and called for legal safeguards against retaliation for exposing corruption.

The affair highlights concerns over political patronage in public health institutions and has become a focal point for debates on government accountability and the protection of citizen rights in Poland.
