Polish Health Fund chief Filip Nowak under fire over salary and hospital scandal

Filip Nowak, president of Poland’s National Health Fund (NFZ), is facing intense political scrutiny. Media reports show he earned more than 400,000 zł in 2025, prompting calls from the ruling Civic Coalition and the left‑wing parties for his dismissal. Prime Minister Donald Tusk, health minister Jolanta Sobierańska‑Grenda and finance minister met with Nowak to discuss reforms and the funding of the NFZ amid the controversy.

The pressure stems from a wider scandal at Warsaw’s South Hospital, where irregularities such as doctors receiving pay for absent shifts were uncovered. The hospital’s board and management have been removed, and Nowak was stripped of his role as chair of the Tariff Council, which influences medical service pricing. Opposition figures, including Digitalisation Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski, have demanded that the NFZ chief resign, arguing that the fund failed to control spending and supervise hospitals effectively.
