Polish heritage groups organize fundraisers to restore historic cemetery monuments
Local heritage organizations in Poland are conducting fundraising drives to preserve historic cemetery monuments and tombstones. In Kozienice and Świerże Górne, the Towarzystwo Miłośników Ziemi Kozienickiej will hold a collection on October 31 and November 1, 2026. The initiative involves local officials, youth volunteers, scouts, and historical reenactors to fund conservation work on aging gravesites that serve as regional historical records.
In Łomża, the Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Ziemi Łomżyńskiej is also preparing for its annual collection. Since 1984, the group has completed 318 conservation projects, including the recent restoration of a mid-19th-century tombstone which cost over 60,000 PLN. Conservation efforts at the 225-year-old Kopernika Street cemetery have led to historical discoveries, such as correcting a previously misdated monument from 1817 back to its original 1814 date.
