Polish heritage sites seek state funding for urgent restorations

Local organisations in Gniezno have drafted an appeal to Poland’s prime minister and government to rescue the historic steam‑locomotive depot, the country’s largest and best‑preserved complex of its type. The groups estimate that purchase and renovation would require several hundred million zlotys (300‑400 million PLN) and are urging the use of earmarked reserve funds to safeguard the heritage site and convert it into a cultural, business and scientific centre.

In Kraków’s Nowa Huta district, conservation work has begun on the Monument to Solidarity. The project, financed mainly by a 238 000‑zloty grant from the State Culture Promotion Fund, aims to repair structural damage and refresh the monument’s appearance at a total cost of roughly 298 000 zlotys. The renovation is part of a nationwide programme to preserve places of memory.

Both initiatives highlight growing pressure on Polish authorities to allocate public resources for the preservation of nationally significant historic sites.
