Polish homeowners combat ant invasions and kitchen odors with natural remedies

Experts note that sudden warm spells in spring and summer trigger mass emergence of ants in Polish homes, a phenomenon linked to climate‑related temperature shifts. The insects seek moist areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and terraces, and their increased presence can damage gardens and indoor spaces. Natural control methods recommended include sprinkling baking soda or powdered baking powder around nests, using corn flour, hot water or vinegar, and applying aromatic deterrents like cinnamon, pepper, ginger, turmeric, cloves, bay leaves, lemon peel or garlic. Planting repellent herbs such as lavender, mint, basil, rosemary, sage, wormwood, parsley or garlic can also help deter colonies.

To reduce unpleasant kitchen trash‑bin odors during hot weather, Polish households are applying baking soda to the bottom of waste containers. The powder absorbs moisture and neutralises foul smells, especially when combined with a few drops of lemon juice or dried lemon zest, and regular cleaning and weekly replacement of the soda are advised. These low‑cost, non‑toxic approaches aim to improve indoor sanitation while limiting reliance on chemical pesticides.
